Queen Victoria(1819-1901)

Victoria (1819-1901), Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and (since 1876) Empress of India. She was the only child of George III's fourth son Edward, Duke of Kent. Throughout the early years of her reign she was influenced by Lord Melbourne, prime minister in 1834, 1835-1841. In 1840, she married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Their marriage was happy and they had four sons and five daughters: Victoria, the Princess Royal, who married Frederick III of Germany; Albert Edward, afterwards Edward VII; Alice, who married the Duke of Hesse; Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha; Helena, who married Prince Kristian of Schleswig-Holstein; Louise, who married the Marquis of Lorne; Arthur, Duke of Connaught; Leopold, Duke of Albany; and Beatrice, who married Prince Henry of Battenberg. She was strongly influenced by her husband, with whom she worked in closest harmony; after his death the stricken queen went into lengthy seclusion, which brought her temporary unpopularity. But with the adventurous Disraeli administrations, vindicated by the queen's recognition as Empress of India, Victoria rose high in her subjects' favour.
Albert, Prince Consort to Queen Victoria (1819-1861) married to Queen Victoria. He was the younger son of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and Louisa, daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Altenburg. He got his education in Brussels and Bonn. In 1840 he married his first cousin, Queen Victoria. In 1857, he was given the title of Prince Consort. He died of typhoid in 1861.
Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (1841-1910), later Edward VII, eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1901.
Princess Alice Maud Mary (1843-1878) British princess, the second daughter of Queen Victoria. In 1862 she married Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt (1837-1892), who later became the Grand Duke. Her youngest daughter Alexandra (Alix) married Nicholas II of Russia and became Tzarina Alexandra Fedorovna; she was executed by the bolsheviks in 1918 with her husband and children.
